How To: Fade Proof Hair Color

Your color can last between color appointments.  Here's how:

1.      Wait 48 hours to shampoo your hair after your salon coloring service.

2.      Shampoo less frequently, if possible.   Too frequent shampooing will diminish your color.  Every other day is
recommended.

3.      Use professional color safe products only. When preserving color is the primary focus, be sure to always look for a label claiming antioxidant and/or sunscreen to protect from UVA/UVB.  Redken Color Extend offers UV protection and also has ingredients to neutralize chlorine, ammonia, and bleach.  Ceramides in this product help to seal the cuticle to lock color in.

4.      Follow up your chemical service with the customizable, salon only Chemistry System to lock color and nutrients in, helping to restore pH balance to the hair leaving the cuticle sealed to keep moisture in. Chemistry System has customizable "shots" that can be intermixed to provide strength for distressed hair, Color Extend for color-treated hair, softness for dry/brittle hair, smooth for very dry/unruly hair, Real Control for high maintenance (sensitized) hair, and dandruff defense for dry, flaky scalp and hair.  This incredible treatment lasts up to 3 weeks (depending on how often you shampoo, and home products being used).

5.      An alternative to the Chemistry System (salon only) is a Shades EQ Glaze (salon only) to help give shine while sealing the cuticle.

6.      Rinse your hair with the coolest water you can handle to help seal the cuticle, and the artificial color from being rinsed down the drain.

7.      Cover your head when you are outside by wearing headgear to protect from damaging UVA/UVB rays.

8.      Heat and chemicals damage the hair. Blow drying, ironing, or over-processing can damage the cuticle of the hair. Use hair color and heat protecting products every time. (Redken Heat Styling products available in an authorized salon.) Hot styling tools are hot enough to melt the cortex of the hair if used improperly or excessively.

9.      Be sure to use a shower cap (or simply pull your hair into a ponytail) to protect it from getting wet while bathing or swimming. If your hair must get wet while swimming be sure to rinse your hair in fresh water and using a leave-in conditioner just before getting into the pool. This way it isn't able to absorb as much chlorine because it is already saturated. Sea salt is very drying as well.

Only purchase professional products in a salon, because they are only guaranteed if purchased in an authorized salon. Please see Redken's Anti-Diversion Policy for more information.
